Facts and stats

  • 2 in 3 victims in a 2017 survey reported they attempted to comply with demands to make the threats stop. Sadly, for the majority, the threats continued even after complying.
  • Roughly 85% of young adults and teens surveyed who had their intimate images used as blackmail by a peer or online perpetrator said embarrassment was their primary reason for not going to their friends and family for help. Other reasons include shame, fear, hopelessness, and isolation.
  • Victims of sextortion have been lead to change schools, work, and home addresses, seek support from medical professionals, or die by suicide.
