Introduction to Strangulation

Difference between Strangulation and Choking
  • Strangulation- external force applied to the neck preventing airflow to the trachea and blood flow to the brain.
    • Types of strangulation include manual (i.e. with someone’s hands), ligature (i.e. with an object like a rope), or hanging.
  • Choking- internal obstruction due to an object lodged in the esophagus blocking airflow to the trachea.
