Emergency care & Strangulation

Call 911 or seek medical attention immediately if…

You are having the following symptoms during and/or after being strangled:
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Trouble speaking or swallowing
  • Swelling to your neck
  • Pain to your neck and/or throat
  • Hoarseness or voice changes
  • Blurred or vision changes (i.e. seeing stars, fading black)
  • Hearing changes (i.e. ringing/buzzing, like you are under water)
  • Continuous or severe headache, nausea, vomiting, or dizziness
  • Seizures, gap in memory, loss of consciousness/fainting
  • Persistent cough
You experienced the following while being strangled:
  • Was lifted off the ground while being strangled
  • Was smothered (face and nose covered) with an object while being strangled
  • If the pressure on your neck would be rated as intense/high on a 1-10 scale (1 being low, 10 being high)
  • If you believed you were going to die while being strangled
